Service station Apfelstrudel and the Nurburgring!

Today I'm off to thru the German Eifel mountains to my first big stop; Nurburg. The scenery is absolutely amazing; as are the mountain roads!

Before I got to that however...traffic. In the rain.

After a solid hour in traffic I blasted through the mountains and arrived at the town of Nurburg ("Black Castle"). High in the Eifel mountains the old town plays host to a racetrack carved through it (and nearby towns) in the 1920s; the Nurburgring - a 28+km mountain racetrack.

The castle itself was built around the 1100-1200s and whilst slowly being repaired offers and amazing view of the mountains and racetrack.

And now for the fun bits! The 28km racetrack "Nordschleife" or "North Loop" is a one way public toll road meaning that most evenings and weekends it's open to the public; filming however was not allowed and the boomgate operator took exception to the go pro. 


So only photos are from the sidelines.

The track is incredibly long and windy (as evidence by my toast/map) but truthfully the nearby mountain roads are more fun - the constant overtaking by performance cars quite literally doing 200+km/h take a little of the fun out of the experience. Also - as its a public road you're responsible for staying as far right as possible so others can get past safely.

Truth be told - the nearby mountain roads are considerably more fun.

Next day I went back to the museum named Ring.Werk; this houses a collection of historic racing cars and some fantastic simulators for the F1 track (much much shorter than the Nordschleife) which I was fairly terrible at!

I then smashed through the gift shop and as with so many souvenirs so far; didnt have room for these Gulf Racing shoes!
